Parents always want their children to be smart
Some experts suggest that teaching children how to code can benefit them in several ways, but new research suggests that music is the gateway to making children smarter.
Programming has a greater advantage in terms of technology but lacks the benefits that music provides.
People argue that teaching children how to code helps them with their language and mathematical skills, but research published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as well as in the Journal of Neuroscience has shown that it has a positive effect on a child’s brain development.
How can learning how to play music make us smarter?
The authors of the research stated that learning music during a child’s early life helps his brain stay more connected and makes his brain neurologically capable of several things, not just music.
“This study demonstrates, among other studies, how the human brain is shaped by experience,” co-author Lutz Jäncke explains to Inverse.
They found that musical brains were able to produce more functional and structural connections compared to people who were not educated.
Regardless of what we talked about, ballet, golf and chess have also been shown to produce similar associations as research has shown.
Simon Leipold explained that the results are important for any experience in areas where anyone can improve themselves through long and intensive training.
The researchers selected 103 professionals and 50 non-musicians for brain scans and after the scan, they were compared and it was found that all the musicians had similar networks.
They also had better functional and structural communication compared to non-musicians, in areas related to voice and speech.
Another factor that played a big role was when musicians started learning music, the earlier a child learned how to play an instrument, the stronger the bonds.
The final recommendation was that early training could help children develop stronger neural connections that make them smarter.
